PJ Library to host Book Mitzvah event in honor of 13th anniversary
By Carrie Fink • PJ Library Coordinator
In Judaism, 13 years represents a milestone, and like a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, our PJ Library program has grown into its unique leadership role in the community over the past 13 years. In honor of this milestone, PJ Library will hold a “Book Mitzvah” event as a fun way to celebrate this achievement with our community.
The event will be held 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at Brookview Park Pavillion in Golden Valley. We’ll have a bounce house, games, ice cream, a book swap, and more. This is a multi-generational event; grandparents and special friends are encouraged to attend. Don’t miss out on this fun summer bash!
PJ Library is a beloved, international program, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, that provides free Jewish books in the mail to families with children age birth through 12. Books range from Jewish holidays to Jewish values to Jewish heroes. Locally, PJ Library Minneapolis sends monthly books to more than 1,600 children throughout Minneapolis and the west metro. Since the program started in Minneapolis, more than 4,700 kids and 2,700 families have been recipients.
In addition to receiving free PJ Library books, families are invited to a variety of engagement programs throughout the year where they can meet and connect with other families and organizations. The programs are accessible, social, and educational. Families also receive a monthly e-newsletter that includes parenting suggestions, blogs, DYI activities to do as a family, and a calendar of upcoming events.

PJ Library Endowment
PJ Library Minneapolis was invited by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to be a part of a cohort of agencies across the country to endow our PJ Library Program. This endowment will ensure this program’s legacy for future generations. Our goal is to raise $1 million by the end of 2023 and we are excited to announce that currently we have raised $300,000. Donations are now being accepted and each cash gift will be matched 25 percent by a generous grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. Donors also have the option to put PJ Library in their estate plan – for each signed letter of intent, JFCS receives $1,000 and, once the gift is legally formalized, we receive an additional $1,000.
