Volunteer Spotlight January 2025: Sonia Ungerman

Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

I am in my early 60s, but still think I am 40-something! Passionate about life, my family, friends and giving back to the community as much as possible.

What JFCS program are you involved with and what does it consist of?

I have volunteered with a group of friends, led by Jennifer Ezrilov, to help put together gifts for the Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) program during the holiday season for those in need. Last year, I helped solicit gifts for the JFCS Online Auction supporting the Annual Benefit. This year, I chaired it with Liz Nirenstein and Julie Silverman, and worked alongside a great group of volunteers! My volunteer role as Online Auction Co-Chair consisted of motivating the other volunteers, leading (by example) and getting the job done!

What motivated you to begin volunteering with JFCS and how long have you been volunteering with JFCS?

I have volunteered with JFCS for the past six years; I chose to start volunteering with the agency because I think its mission is so incredibly important and powerful. With our world being so divided in politics, not to mention several more topics, JFCS is about making a difference in the Jewish community and the secular community as well.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering with JFCS and how has it impacted your life?

The people working with JFCS are amazing, starting with CEO Judy HalperalpHalH and Development Director Dana Rubin, and all of others I have come in contact with – it is rewarding to feel like I am helping impact others’ lives in a positive way.

Do you have any memorable stories about your JFCS volunteer experience to share?

There isn’t just one – it is the culmination of so many!

What would you say to someone who’s thinking of volunteering with JFCS?

The simple act of helping people provides happiness and a greater sense of purpose. JFCS impacts so many people that you can’t help but get the “helper high!”

Anything else you want to share?

Just gratitude for those that work for and lead JFCS. They make volunteering enjoyable and appreciated. It is not necessary, as there aren’t any expectations when donating time, but the reality is that they are tremendously grateful for the time we give.
