From the Desk of CEO Judy Halper: December 2023
In a few days we will experience the winter solstice, and with it, the relief that little by little, daylight is beginning to accumulate. Eventually, we will experience more light with each passing day. Now more than ever, that light is so welcome. It is commonplace to remind people of the challenges often experienced during this time of year. But many recent events combined with the shortage of daylight are all the reminder we need that these feel like dark days, and not just because it’s late December.
Experts in the field of mental health suggest that one way we can let more light into our lives and combat the challenging affects associated with darkness, loneliness, and isolation is to find ways to feel proactive. They say that small actions are as effective as large ones. The meaning we apply to our ability to take action or feel as if we are contributing can increase our mood, and reduce anxiety and depression. It can also provide us with more energy, increasing our productivity and ability to function.
As the holidays become memories in our rearview mirrors, and with many months to go before we experience substantially more light, I invite you to check out volunteer opportunities with Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis. We have experiences for folks who want an occasional opportunity to contribute, as well as ongoing volunteer needs. We can even help you connect with an organization that may have what you’re looking for when it isn’t available at JFCS.
Giving, whether it’s your time or your treasure, feels good. It is the ideal antidote to feeling as if nothing you can do or have to offer will matter. As we experience more daylight coming into our lives day by day, my wish for our JFCS community is that the coming new year will bring much hope and light to you and your families. Thank you for all you do for JFCS!
