From the Desk of CEO Judy Halper: December 2024

Lighting the Chanukah menorah one candle and one night at a time is typically a joyous experience for children. After all, each candle lit may represent another opportunity to open a gift, eat sugar cookies and jelly donuts, spin dreydels, or just gather with friends and family.

For me, at this stage of life, my favorite part of Chanukah is the last night. I love to see the full display of candles on my menorah representing each of the eight days of the holiday. The glow of a fully lit menorah brings much needed light, sparkle and joy to these final days of the year, where sunlight is so spare.

While my home enjoys the heat of the burning Chanukah candles, my spirit and my soul feel the warmth that is embedded in the holidays and the season. No matter the hustle bustle of preparing for the holidays, or the race to get year-end obligations completed, it’s hard to not feel and appreciate the kindness of so many people inspired to be charitable and generous at this time of year. The benefit of getting older is understanding and appreciating the holiday season beyond the gifts, food, and frenzy.

As the days of the year wind down and correspondingly, more sunlight begins to appear, I want to thank all of you who contributed to JFCS this year. Your time spent volunteering is valued; your donations truly make a difference; and your support for the essential programs and services Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis provides will ensure the holidays and all days will be brighter for those we serve.
