Food insecurity in Minnesota: A growing concern and the importance of community support

By Mental Health and Senior Services Director Jill Kozberg and Associate Director of Client Services Laura Gorke
Minnesota Foodshare campaigns every March, this year from March 1 through April 6, to raise funds and food donations across the state. Please join us in supporting our friend and neighbor, PRISM, during this year’s campaign, as the organization aims to raise 250,000 combined dollars and pounds of food. Every pound of food translates to $1 raised. Every dollar and every pound of food collected helps to support families in need.
Even as the donation boxes start to fill, the need continues to grow. Reports show 537,890 Minnesotans are facing hunger, with 34% of these individuals under the age of 18. Food insecurity has become an increasing concern in Minnesota, impacting countless families across the state. According to recent reports, nearly one in five households faces food insecurity, with the numbers expected to rise as inflation and economic pressures strain household budgets. Minnesotans made nearly 9 million visits to food shelves in 2024, a record high.

Local food shelves, such as PRISM Marketplace Food Shelf, play a critical role in addressing this issue, providing vital support to those struggling to make ends meet. However, food shelves are facing a growing gap between demand and available resources. As the need continues to grow, it’s essential for communities to come together to provide assistance.
JFCS is hard at work addressing food insecurity in a variety of ways. We deliver packages of food from PRISM to those who qualify. We also stock and distribute emergency food boxes, as the need arises for clients and community members. Through our Kosher Meals on Wheels program, we provide nutritious, frozen, home-delivered meals to clients across the community. Families in need can self-refer or be referred by staff to receive a Passover bag containing several Passover foods and ritual items to help them celebrate Passover next month. Our Intake and Resource Connection team provides valuable resource information to callers, staff, and clients.
Food insecurity in Minnesota remains a pressing issue. As we face these challenges, community support is crucial in meeting the rising demand and ensuring that no one in our community has to go hungry. Thank you for all you do to support JFCS and PRISM. Every can, dollar, or hour of your time helps!
