January 2025 Quarterly Volunteer Newsletter

By Dana Shapiro • Community and Volunteer Engagement Manager

Thank you to our volunteer community for your continued support of JFCS and our volunteer services. We hope you are hanging in there with everything going on in the world, and if not, please reach out to us at any time and know that we are here to help you. If you’re reading this column, you may already be aware of the many mental and physical health benefits that volunteering can provide both your own well-being and our communities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was Monday, Jan. 20, and it is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Throughout the year, JFCS – through our programs and services – is committed to helping build equity and opportunity for all people in our community and strives to create systems and institutions that operate on behalf of people of all races. We believe in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of serving others, as well as the Jewish value of “tikkun olam” (repairing the world), and we offer many ways for volunteers to get involved in a cause or causes that you find meaningful.

Check out these resources to learn more about MLK Jr. Day of Service and how you and your family can get involved in a cause that is meaningful to you. HandsOn Twin Cities | Points of Light | AmeriCorps | JFCS Minneapolis

This is a wonderful season to volunteer, and there are a variety of ways you can get involved both here and in the community. Many of our volunteers go away for the winter, so we could use some extra support in some of our volunteer areas like driving for Garber Transportation and providing 1:1 companionship to seniors during this time.

Speaking of snowbirds, if you are one, feel free to check out the listing of partner agencies across the country if you want to get connected to an agency similar to JFCS Minneapolis while you’re away. Click here to find an agency near you. We look forward to welcoming you back to volunteer with us when you return after the winter.

I’m here to help support you in your volunteer engagement at JFCS, so feel free to reach out at any point if there’s anything I can do to help!
